I just purchased the #XBox Elite controller (Series 2) because I've been reworking my gaming rig and figured, what the hell, I deserve it. After toying with the thing all week, I have concluded that this is the most *garbage* controller I have ever held.
-
My ultimate goal was "I want to play #RocketLeague from my couch using #SteamLink with my new #Xbox Elite controller." I never succeeded.
-
Initial impressions of the controller were good. * Nice box. * I appreciate the travel case. * Lots of interchangeable parts. * Grip is comfortable. * Never realized how much I appreciate configuring the trigger depth, nice for binary inputs (ie. fighting games).
-
I start off connecting the controller to my PC, no issues. #Windows has historically been great about making Xbox controllers "just work" and I always appreciate that. Then I start Rocket League and am spammed with the Xbox game bar. Every time I dismiss it, it comes right back.
-
Any game is unplayable because the game bar constantly wants my attention. After some Googling I found that apparently the "A" button opens the game bar by default, because "A" is known for being a rarely used button on the controller. answers.microsoft.com/en-us/xbox/forum/all/both-xbox-botton-and-a-botton-can-open-xbox-game/1e80c4c0-3423-40cc-97eb-d9d16994fa1c?auth=1

I need to install a separate app and update the controller. I have to assume this is a bug, and bugs happen, I get it. But in 25 years of gaming, I have *never* needed a day one patch for👏 a👏 controller👏. Hell, I don't think I've ever consciously updated a controller before.
-
For context, I was console gamer as a child, I grew up with #Halo, played more #Xbox than #PlayStation. I have never had #XboxLive. My parents were the "you'll get abducted if you play online" kind of parents. This was when consoles first went online. My friends went, I didn't.
-
That kind of stuck with me, and to this day I mostly play single player games (ignore the fact that I'm trying to play Rocket League here). I shifted to PC as I got older and did some online games there: #L4D, #TF2, #Minecraft. But not much more.
-
I know I had an #Xbox account at some point, but I haven't logged into it in at least 10 years. I have no idea what the password is and probably don't even have the email account anymore. I could try to recover it or set up a new one, but I will never use it again.
-
Takeaway, I'm not going to set up an account to configure my goddamn controller. I know I'm in the minority, I'm probably weird for it, but I'm just not gonna do it. But at least *updating* the controller didn't require this, so it should work right?
-
Well the "A" button is now "functional" (we'll come back to that). I'm able to play the game. I switch over to the Steam Link and start the game, knock the ball around, looking good. After ~30 seconds of play, the controller just stops.
-
It stops in the most inexplicable way. It's still connected (guide button is lit, Steam Link doesn't complain), but none of the buttons do anything. The car is still moving forward thinking I have the gas held down. Pressing guide or holding select doesn't even open Steam anymore
-
It's like the whole controller temporarily bricks itself. I have to power cycle the controller and reconnect it to fix, which gives me another 30 seconds of play before repeating the cycle. This is 100% reproducible for me.
-
I think to myself "I'm a professional #SoftwareEngineer, I can debug this". * I try my other Xbox One controller. * I play directly on my PC. * I try another game. * I try another non-Steam game (because Rocket League is no longer on Steam). All of these work as expected.
-
I Google suggestions and try the randomest things (run Steam as admin). I mess with the drivers and Steam controller settings, disable overlays, with and without Big Picture. Nothing helps. As far as I can tell: Rocket League + Steam Link + Xbox Elite controller = No.
-
I experimented with #DragonBallFighterZ and it worked, but I found myself struggling with combos. I seemed to be missing inputs somehow? I eventually discovered that the A button (Y too) just doesn't register sometimes. This is apparently a common problem reddit.com/r/xboxone/comments/nmv8f9/elite_series_2_consistent_problem_with/
-
I have no idea how a $140 premium, first-party controller *drops face button inputs*, but apparently that's the world we live in. I never realized "As a gamer, I want to press the A button, so I can play the game" would be so difficult.
-
I also noticed some severe snapback on the control stick, enough for menus to be unusable without the D-pad. This did go away eventually, so I suspect the control stick wasn't quite set correctly. Snapback is a feeling I haven't experienced since #SuperSmashBrosMelee.
-
After restarting and reconnecting so many times, I also discovered that the controller is very slow to connect. Both it and the PC / Steam Link will register the connection, but the controller won't work for 10 - 30 seconds. A minor compliant, but it's strangely novel issue.
-
I can't recall any controller that has had any of these issues. * I've never updated a controller. * I've never had to sign in for a controller. * I've never seen inputs drop like this. * I haven't seen snapback since the #GameCube. * I've never seen a slow connection.
-
Any one of these might be excusable (except the A button stuff, that's "recall the thing" broken). All of these together on the (again) $140 premium, first-party controller is insane 🤯.
-
After 5+ hours of debugging, I still haven't successfully played Rocket League on my Steam Link. I have no idea what's going on there and the issue is so nuanced I can't find any useful information online. I'm just frustrated and angry and can't be bothered anymore.
-
To add insult to injury, #Windows literally asked me "Hey, is now a good time to finish setting up #WindowsHello?" (I recently reinstalled and discovered that staying offline during setup lets you skip the #Microsoft account BS. Now I get reminders.🙃) @develwoutacause/1480781933130907649?s=20&t=Myyuttba-gOs6aqR3dnkzA

Rocket League or Steam Link might be partially at fault, I can't tell. What I can tell is that this is by far the worst controller I have ever used. I really didn't think I had high expectations here, yet I have been consistently disappointed at every turn.🙁🎮🔥
